Enterprises turn to SMS - Sybase 365 article (2sms reference)

http://www.sybase.com/detail?id=1062665

The unrivalled global usage of mobile messaging is becoming increasingly attractive to enterprises as a generator for new revenue streams as well as providing value added services for end-users. More and more are embracing SMS, as a new and effective medium to reach their customers.

An example of how SMS can lead to cost reduction and increased customer satisfaction: An electronics manufacturer using SMS to lessen the burden on their call center for returned and warranty goods. This company has a single return center and a single phone number that customers can call. When an appliance breaks down, the customer calls the 800 number; the operator takes the appliance serial number and asks the customer to send the item to a specific address for repair. The customer sends it, then calls to see if it was received; then calls again to see if it is being fixed, then calls again to ask when it will be shipped back to them.

By using SMS, the customer sends a text message to the repair group with the appliance serial number; they get a return SMS message that gives them the address to which the item must be sent. When the item is received, the repair center confirms via an SMS alert to the customer and when the item is repaired the customer receives an SMS alert with the tracking number for the return shipment.

What is the difference? A minimum of five phone calls at the cost of $6 per minute versus five SMS messages with a total cost of about $0.25. Other benefits to the enterprise and the customer include reduction in call wait times and increase in customer satisfaction.

Cable & Wireless Sure enhances Strongest Signal Roaming service

A new service from Sure (Cable & Wireless) that gives mobile phone users the best possible chance of receiving a signal anywhere in the UK using Strongest Signal Roaming (SSR) technology has been enhanced with the addition of a Secure SMS and Emergency Planning SMS solution.

Companies that rely on their staff having access to a phone signal 24 hours a day, 365 days a year can now send encrypted text messages to them. Sure, Isle of Man (a trading arm of Cable & Wireless International) has teamed up with 2sms, a company serving corporate customers across the UK and USA, to offer the service in the British Isles.

Managing director of 2sms, Tim King, commented: “With the increased use of mobile technology more people are doing business away from the secured environment of an office. Combining an all UK network SIM with secure SMS messaging and emergency planning services brings a complete suite of tools for the management of unexpected events.”

Chief executive of Sure in the Isle of Man, Simon Last-Sutton, said: “We’re delighted with the partnership with 2sms as it makes our Sure Safety suite of products even more attractive. This solution now enables key personnel to communicate privately when telephone use may not be appropriate.”

King added: “Secure SMS messages are encrypted and cannot be stored on the mobile phone. Messages can optionally require a password to be read and can optionally be set to read once only before they dissolve. The emergency planning product allows for mass broadcast of SMS messages from any computer or phone to all or some of a company’s staff members. Most significantly it can be used to take a roll call of key personnel to gauge the safety status of all members of staff in the event of an emergency.”

There are three Sure Safety products available with the 2sms texting solution: Sure Safety Pre-pay is designed for personnel that can’t justify having a work phone full time but need one for occasional use; Sure Safety Standard is for personnel who cannot afford to be without mobile phone coverage within the British Isles and is significantly cheaper than using a foreign SIM; and Sure Safety Emergency is designed as a phone that needs to be always on with a very high credit limit but spends most of its time in a glove box or desk drawer.

UK Text Messager 2sms Secures $880K

London -- Mobile phone messaging services provider 2sms has secured an investment of GBP450,000 ($883,000). The funding includes GBP250,000
($490,000) from the Capital Fund, which participated alongside individual investor Richard Goldstein, who has also joined the 2sms board.

2sms provides text-messaging services to businesses, with software that can be bolted onto the back-end systems its clients are currently using, thereby avoiding technology conflicts, the company said.

Since beginning operations in 2000, 2sms has been concentrating on the U.K. market, where it now has more than 1,500 customers. The company is now expanding into the U.S.

Established in 2002, the Capital Fund, managed by YFM Venture Finance Limited, is a GBP50 million venture capital fund that backs fast-growing small- and medium-sized companies in the London area and is the largest of England's regional venture capital funds, the firm said.

SMTP gateways for SMS messages

Free gateways exist for SMS message delivery. These are subject to spam filters, and can get busy. Check the terms and conditions of each carrier for conditions of use. These gateways are SMTP (email) servers that convert messages into text messages (SMS).

AT&T : Your cell phone number@mmode.com e.g. 4443332222@mmode.com
Cingular : Your cell phone number@mobile.mycingular.com
Nextel : Your cell phone number@messaging.nextel.com
Sprint PCS : Your cell phone number@messaging.sprintpcs.com
T-Mobile : Your cell phone number@tmomail.net
Verizon Wireless : Your cell phone number@vtext.com

If service delivery matters to you, you might want to consider SMPP services. These cost money (cents per message), but come with SLA's, priority routing, audit trail and ISO27001 certification for information security. Visit www.2sms.com for more details.

We will post a more complete analysis of SMTP / SMPP services shortly.

How quick (slow) is email - Ask Ferrari!

While many assume that email is instant, this is not the case. A delay to email cost Ferrari (Italian Motor Racing team) dearly at the recent Grand Prix in Japan. Perhaps a text message would have been faster!

ps With text messaging, you know when your recipients got the message.
